Facebook moves from small screen to big screen..

Well it was inevitable, the omnipresent social     media entity that is Facebook was just an  American success story waiting to be capitalised by Hollywood big wigs and here ‘tis..

The Social Network is a 2010 film that has just opened on Oct 1st in the US about the founding of Facebook, based on the book the The Accidental Billionaires.

Apparently the film has received critical acclaim already, despite contention as to whether Facebook is “too recent a phenomenon for there to be film about it, to how worthy Facebook is of a movie in the first place”, as per Dakotastudent. Seems to think it’s a pretty good flick though, and one of the most ‘relatable and interesting films in recent years.’ Read his opinion here Dakotastudent – Wired-in-facebook-film-lives-up-to-hype.

What about you guys? Will you be rushing out to privy to the making of the mountain soon? Check out the trailer Official Trailer – The Social Network

Is Google God????

Hi peeps

I don’t think it’s possible to study e-marketing without commenting on the monopoly that is GOOGLE.

Last week we were talking about Google being pretty much like the ‘regulator’ of a plethora of e-marketing tricks of the trade and it got me to thinking about the fact that the phrase ‘that’s why God invented Google’ has infiltrated its way into my vernacular as a response to many a request from friends, family (hey and sometimes even foes) for random pieces of trivia requiring urgent answers – for instance last night when I played quickdraw with my friend’s Iphone vs my Blackberry to find out “How many days can one actually go without sleep?” (Which is apparently inconclusive or 11 days depending on your source by the way!) Anyway I digress…what it really made me think is..Is Google God?

And it seems I’m not the only one.. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Twitter just for Narcissists?

I was checking out Twitter’s Top 10 Brands knocking Old Spice off the top spot in the viral marketing ladder (Top 10 Brands in Adage) and I had to laugh at the observation of Twitter ‘buzz’ essentially begetting itself…go figure apparently Twitterers love Twitter!

Adage reports that within one hour of Twitter unveiling it’s new features there were ‘320,000 tweets about Twitter — eight times the average of 40,000 per hour, and within a day 2.4 million Twitter-obsessed tweets about the same! See “Twitter Unveils New Features for Users and Advertisers” for the full article.   My question, fellow marketers though is – if self concept in consumer behaviour studies is anything to go by, are self-indulgent trend setting-‘look-at-me” narcissists, not one of the most impressionable target markets for new consumer products, and Twitter, in turn, a marketers dream for tapping into early adopter markets and riding the wave?

Check out Twitterers love Twitter for the full article. Enjoy!

Big Brands Entrust YouTube Stars

Hi All

As we’ve discussed in the lectures, and drawing on Tatiana’s point – one of the main reason’s that social media is the way forward is that whilst people are becoming more sceptical of marketing and advertising in today’s consumer climate, the one trusted medium still left is that of ‘friends, their friends and all those we collectively respect’. I came across an article in Ad Age Digital, which discusses how You Tube exemplifies this point as Web-Video Celebrities act as a trusted online voice. The article says “that big-time brands like Lancome, McDonald’s, Ford and Kellogg’s are trusting YouTube celebs with their money and reputations. ‘The reason we turned to them is because they have a valid voice in their community, and people trust what they say and what they think,’ said Scott Monty, head of social media for Ford Motors.

They’ve got trust and, it turns out, engagement.”

Groupon – The future of retail?

Hi Guys

I stumbled across an article in B&T Magazine about hot emerging social media platforms that marketers need to know about. Once of them that seems here to stay is Groupon.com, aggregating discount social site that offers one ‘unbeatable’ deal per day at 50-90% off. It keeps 50% of the revenue for each deal completed as its advertisement fee.

Nutritionbusinessjournal.com tells more…

 Nutrition Business Journal

The B&T article quotes Aden Hepburn from Sydney’s Ideawork’s as saying “Groupon has the potential to make a business overnight, fill up an event or drive customers to a physical store, so for brand businesses and marketers, there is a wealth of potential to explore.” Read the rest of this entry »
